Thank you for your consideration for this important ministry. Your role on the altar has three purposes. Practically speaking, your main responsibility is to assist me and all priests at the altar. This might entail holding a book, bringing things to and from the altar, washing our hands, etc.
There is another role you play and that is has leaders of prayer. You have the honor and the privilege of having the best seat in the house for the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. However, occupying these seats come with a responsibility. People look to us to lead them. If we are not paying attention, playing with our hair, fiddling with our jewelry or watches, or slouching in our chairs those kinds of things can distract the people of God from the Lord. That is why when we are sitting in the sanctuary it is important for us to open a hymnal when it is time to sing, look at the lector when the readings are being proclaimed, and kneel straight up focusing on the altar during the Eucharistic Prayer. If we are focused on the Lord, so will the people sitting in the pews.
The third point is that serving on the altar can help you grow closer to the Lord. In order for us to grow in our faith it is important that we engage it. You have taken that first step by coming forward considering this important ministry. Serving at the altar may seem overwhelming. Yes you do have some responsibilities and it may seem there is a lot to remember. Just give it time. If you are nervous sitting in front of people, that’s ok. It’s a good sign. Nervousness is a sign of humility. Just keep your eyes focused on the Lord and you will do just fine.
Finally, I want to say a word of thanks to your parents. Thank you for encouraging your children to consider this important ministry. I also thank you ahead of time for making sure your children fulfill their commitment at the altar. In this guidebook you will find such things at what your children should wear and when they should arrive. As pastor I would also ask you to review with your children their responsibilities. You are the primary educators of your children and any help you can provide them to assist them to grow in this ministry is essential. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!
Sincerely in Christ,
Father Bateman.
