Fr. Bateman, who returned to the Harrisburg Diocese in June 2020 after an eight-month deployment as chaplain at the Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates, said he is looking forward to being a parish priest again. Prior to his recent deployment and a three-month period working in the Diocesan Tribunal last Fall, he had served in Rome for 3 ½ years as Secretary to Edwin Cardinal O’Brien (who is the former Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem) and also earned his JCL in Canon Law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the “Angelicum”) and joined the order and is now a Knight Commander in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
“Visiting the members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre throughout Italy and Europe, in South Africa and South America, in Australia, Asia and North America enabled me to see the One, Holy, Catholic Church as her people live the faith in their particular cultural and historical situations,” Fr. Bateman recently wrote.
“It is awesome to be back home,” Father Bateman emphasized. “I’ve looked forward to returning to parish ministry these 4+ years. My past two assignments have been really fantastic opportunities – Rome and military deployment – but I am a parish priest at heart; that’s where I belong. “ It truly is where my passion lies – serving the people of God in a parish.”
Past Assignments/Experience:
Before going to Rome, Fr. Bateman served as the pastor of St. Francis Xavier, Gettysburg (2014-2016), Saint Andrew the Apostle Parish, Waynesboro (2009-2014), Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish, Lewistown and St. Jude Thaddeus Parish, Mifflintown (2003-2009).
Prior priestly assignments included Saint Joseph Parish, Hanover, Saint Francis of Assisi Parish, Harrisburg, and chaplain at both Delone and Bishop McDevitt Catholic High Schools. He has also been involved in Hispanic Ministry for 9 years at various parishes.
Background:
Fr. Bateman attended seminary at the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio for 5 years where he earned both a Master of Divinity and Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in morality), graduating Cum Laude. He was ordained to the Sacred Priesthood of Jesus Christ in May of 1996 by Bishop Nicholas Dattilo. His undergraduate studies were completed at Temple University in Philadelphia, where he graduated Summa Cum Laude while majoring in recreation therapy and a minor in gerontology.
